The Energy demands of the metropolitan Phoenix and Tucson regions have been supplied with fresh clean water and electricity at the cost of the indigenous communities that lay along mining operations, power plants, and water ways. These places are considered a sacrificial must in order to keep resources to continually be fed at a cheap cost to the cities.

Native people’s of the Southwest have faced imprisonment not only by the spanish through the establishment of the slave trade, but have also been subjugated to “internment” prisoner of war camps by the U.S. government. For a majority of the tribes these camps turned into reservations sometimes on traditionally held territories. This idea of the prison industrial complex has histories linked with the indigenous peoples of these lands. The boarding school system was designed to further reprogram us into American society. Despite being the smallest segment of the population, Native Americans have the second largest state prison incarceration rate in the nation. I will be speaking at this conference reflecting my art and activism to highlight different political issues I have been a part of.

“I think the importance of artists in the Native American community is more than just an aesthetic museum type of experience. For us, it was survival. When you think about the experiences our communities have survived, they’ve sustained through war and not just war, but persecution, annihilation, cultural annihilation…We’ve used art as our way of defining ourselves and expressing ourselves, religiously, spiritually, our language base, everything has gone into that expression. So our art is really an identity. It’s so important to look at the art to understand the unique culture of the Native American tribes and part of our sustainability and our survival ties directly into that art.”
